The tour will be launched on Friday, December 7, as part of Wilmington’s Art on the Town. Visitors are encouraged to join the participating artists for a reception Friday December 7th 6-9 pm at the Buzz Ware Village Center in Arden.

Visitors to Arden undoubtedly notice that no two houses look alike. Maybe that’s why artists are so attracted to it. Since the founding of Arden in 1900 by sculptor Frank Stephens and architect William Price, this unique community has been a haven for visual artists, crafts people, musicians and actors. The three Ardens, consisting of Arden, Ardentown and Ardencroft, are Single Tax as well as Arts & Crafts communities. The Single Tax is an economic theory proposed by Henry George, an American economist and philosopher in the late nineteenth-century. George felt that a land value tax was the most fair and equitable tax and that any income tax was unfair by nature. The Ardens also were founded on the ideals of William Morris, as an Arts and Crafts community. The Arts & Crafts movement was a reaction against the industrial revolution and valued handcrafted goods and the incorporation of individualistic design.

The Arden Craft Shop Museum supports this idea today and hosts Afternoon with the Artist: One Sunday every month, a local artist displays their work.

The Annual Ardens Artists Studio Tour is the only opportunity to meet and see the artists in their studios, where they create their work. 20 plus artists are participating in this year’s tour, although not all are opening their studios. A group show will be mounted at the Buzz Ware Village Center; maps can be picked up at all locations for the self-guided tour. Lots of work will be for sale and you’ll have the opportunity to learn what went into the making of the work. 100% of the artist's sales benefit the artist. Shop locally for unique holiday gifts and support the arts.
This is the piece I will have in the art raffle. Each artist has donated a piece of art for a raffle. All proceeds will be used to finance future art events showcasing the talents of the many artists who live, work, and thrive in our villages. Tickets may be purchased at the Buzz Ware Village Center as well as all participating studios throughout the weekend. The prize drawing will be Sunday afternoon, December 9, at 5 p.m. Winners will be contacted by the artists.
“There is a resurgence of the visual arts in Arden as we artists become more aware of each other. The history of Arden as an artist colony is perhaps the reason that our residents and artists alike have been drawn here to live and work. It's as if the town itself and all of its creative activities have bred a mystical place in which to nurture creativity. Just as our own art that we produce could probably be made anywhere, it’s the acceptance and interest of what we do by the community at large and the contacts that we have with our own community of artists which really allows us to more freely be creative in our own private utopia.” said David Burslem.
Burslem grew up in Arden and cites among his influences well known Arden artists: Aurelius Renzetti, Bunni Hurlong and Ash and Mary Burslem.

“When I moved to Arden 19 years ago from Center City Philadelphia I wondered if I would fit in,” I found that my new surroundings influenced a return to nature themed work and I found myself stopping in on friends in their studios regularly something that never happened in the city.

“I love working in the "village" and being surrounded by so many artists and talented people. I walk into my studio and immediately get lost and totally absorbed in designing and making my jewelry.” said Joy Davis. Davis has shared a sun-drenched studio in Ardentown with Dolores Pye Josey since 1993.

“I don’t know if it’s because I feel so at home here or what, the shoots I do in Arden always turn out great.” photographer Joe del Tufo said.
Once a year the center of the village is transformed by many volunteers into a Fair grounds for the Arden Fair and Antiques Market held the Saturday of Labor Day Weekend. The Fair features children’s games and rides, handmade crafts by over 100 vendors, an Antiques Market, used books, plants, live music in the Shady Grove, food and drink, an art exhibit, and more. Proceeds from the Fair help maintain the Arden Gild Hall, where the public can enjoy concerts, musicals, plays, dances, suppers, and programs throughout the year.

The role I play is curation of the Art Show in the Backstage Gallery of the Gild Hall. It is always someone who lives in Arden, Adentown or Ardencroft, and often it is one featured artist. This year I sent out a call for entries to all women artists. The gallery which is used as a green room for Shakespeare productions and musical performers throughout the year, needed to be painted, thanks Shari Phalan for helping! Then Barbara Henry and I installed 37 pieces of artwork that coincidentally was the exactly right amount of artwork for the space. The mediums and techniques ran the gamut and included metal piercing, quilting, traditional rug hooking, oil painting, watercolor painting, nuno felting, shibori dying, restoration of leather chaps, pastel drawing, colored pencil drawing and ceramic and metal sculpting. Women Artists of the Ardens are a group of pretty talented individuals. But I have to give one shout out to a man. Alton Dahl does the machine stitching on Bev's beautiful quilts and he installed the ceiling lights Friday morning that made the show the success it was. Without him I don't know how anyone would have seen anything. The feedback was great and many stories were shared in typical Arden fashion. Thanks to everyone that participated. My photos aren't great. Sorry, Rhys I didn't get your work in the pictures and Shari, sorry your's is cropped.

Participating Artists:

Beverley Barnett, quilting,
Naomi Clark, metal piercing,
Hunter Clarke, painting,
Linda Celestian, painting and silk sculpture,
Ellen Dolmetsch, traditional hooked rugs,
Barbara Henry, nuno felted wearables,
Bunni Hurlong, pastel drawing,
Judith Kay, photography,
Rhys McClure, colored pencil,
Eleanore Morrow, oil painting,
Betty O’Regan, hand-made paper and collage,
Jeanne Orr, watercolor,
Erica Orr, pen and watercolor,
Linda Parks, ceramic and metal sculpture,
Shari Phalan, restoration of leather chaps and wreath,
Toby Ridings, cyanotypes,
Marjorie Roberts, oil painting,
Jeanne Stigler, oil painting and appliqued quilt,
Dorothy Verne, oil painting.
Linda Celestianhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13366377181876833826noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6578427773054394972.post-13895665307059741752012-08-03T18:50:00.001-04:002012-08-03T18:50:16.876-04:00New PaintingSummer is flying by. Here's a new painting I just finished in the nick of time for a grant proposal.

Fenland, oil on canvas, 36 x 60 inches

It reminds me of the marshland in Provincetown where the ocean meets the land.

I'm preparing to teach my first ever Summer Art Program in my home studio. I'm so excited. I'll be teaching kids some fun, easy printmaking projects that you don't need a printing press for.Linda Celestianhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13366377181876833826noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6578427773054394972.post-76382260671066461932012-07-18T21:27:00.001-04:002012-07-18T21:27:07.136-04:00Silk and Painting PendantsI've recently stocked my etsy shop with NEW pendants. My body was home but my heart was still there.

I will have a hard time teaching Expressive Painting in a new environment because I know nothing will ever come close to what happened on Star Island. I'm going to try to recap the experience for myself and the many new friends I made.

I opened with an exercise from Betty Edwards book Drawing on the Artist Within. Drawing Out Insight exercise: Drawing with marks alone, no pictures the emotions 1. Anger, 2. Joy, 3. Peacefulness (Tranquility), 4. Depression, 5. Human Energy, 6. Femininity, 7. Illness, 8. Your Choice.
Draw how the emotion makes you feel, I instructed. We discussed the similarities and differences in the drawings.

Then they chose one emotion to do an ink painting of with some really beautiful results.

For homework I instructed everyone to look at colors, here are a few photos I took that day.

Day 2: Color

I shared color poems, and we wrote color poems, how a color smells, sounds, feels, tastes, looks, makes you feel and other associations.

Painting with large sponge brushes we painted color fields of one or two colors per page.

I had fun photographing them in different arrangements.

Homework was to look at texture. The opening is this Thursday June 14th, 6-8 pm and goes through September 9th, 2012.

The paintings are done on 2 separate pieces of Plexiglass held together at the top and bottom with space between to let light through and hopefully cast a little color on the gallery wall.

I can't wait to see the other artist's work all together. I haven't had a chance to go through the museum yet but it looks pretty cool if you are looking for something to do with the kids this summer. It's the kind of place my father would have loved, there's even supposed to be a Richardson boat like the one I spent my summers on as a kid there. They build boats and run summer camps for kids too. My Dad would have been so proud that my work is being shown there. Makes me smile.Linda Celestianhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13366377181876833826noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6578427773054394972.post-80869759212045783502012-05-25T18:48:00.001-04:002012-05-25T18:59:11.877-04:00Art in the Open, Philadelphia 2012I'm still digging paint out from under my nails and recovering from the 1,800 times I crouched and stood up while working. The weather was beautiful. I was in the sun but it didn't bother me because I was talking or working the entire time. My paint tarps were saturated and I had to hang them out to dry when I got home. I worked in fluid acrylics mixed with pouring medium and water, thanks to support from an opportunity grant from the Delaware Division of the Arts.

My work is about my connection to nature. The combination of the environment and my process were successful in drawing observers attention to the river and their own relationship to nature. People enjoyed watching the thinned down paint run and form natural patterns and commented on how it reminded them of rivers, tree branches and their own veins. This was especially true of the paintings on Plexiglass as they are reminiscent of microcosms on slides. I enjoyed hearing peoples thoughts, feelings and impressions of the process and the work as it evolved over the 3 days. I met so many nice people and look forward to seeing the other participating artists at the exhibition opening on June 14th at the Independence Seaport Museum.

Some of the finished work...

I photographed these quickly in my studio for the curator of the show. Art in the Open (AiO) is a citywide event that celebrates artists, their inspirations for creating art, and their relationships with the urban environment. The above picture was taken on the Schuylkill River Trail, near 23rd and Race a few weeks ago.

What is this event exactly? Well it's not an art fair. I'm not selling my work this weekend I'm creating the work. It's in the tradition of en plein air painting a French expression which means "in the open air", and is particularly used to describe the act of painting outdoors. I'll be working in acrylic paint, watercolor and colored inks for the convenience of their quick drying qualities. With the support of an opportunity grant from the Delaware Division of the Arts I purchased fluid acrylics, pouring medium, wood panels and some large pieces of Plexiglas to paint on. I'll also bring some primed and unprimed stretched canvases and watercolor paper.

My work is about nature and the connection between man and nature. It seems fitting to make my work outside on location en plein air. My process is pouring thinned paint, allowing it to run and puddle like liquids in nature. The result is patterns similar to waterways. There is a correlation between these imaginary waterways and our own circulatory system, illustrating the connection between earth and mankind. I usually work in a climate-controlled studio so I’m interested in taking on the challenge of working outdoors. This will push my work forward as I embrace chance and make nature my muse and partner. I will invite whatever effect wind, sun, and rain have on the work. That's what I wrote for my proposal anyway but it looks like it's going to be beautiful weather those 3 days.

I'm really looking forward to this opportunity to step outside of my comfort zone and see what happens. The finished work will be exhibited at the Independence Seaport Museum, Philadelphia, June 14 - September 9, 2012.

If you are thinking about coming out this weekend there will be 17 other artists working in a variety of styles and fun, family art activities scheduled throughout the event. Check the Art in the Open website for dates, times and locations. I will be doing real time updates on my location and progress on my Linda Celestian Artist Facebook page. Whether you are a beginner or professional, an active participant or interested observer, Arts offers a chance to express your artistry and celebrate your uniqueness in a breathtaking and supportive environment.

Join us. Make new friends. Discover hidden talents. Create a masterpiece or just enjoy the extraordinary beauty of this magical island. Star Arts offers an unforgettable opportunity to experience creativity, a sense of community and individual spirituality." excerpted from the website.

I will be teaching Expressive Painting, helping participants to understand and achieve their goals for self expression. Working with painting, printmaking and collage techniques we will explore line, shape, form, space, color and texture in regards to communicating in a visual language. Inspiration will be found in nature and personal stories.

I will be bringing inexpensive bulk supplies for planned activities, so those who wish can simply pay a materials fee of $15 per person and save your good materials for serious application. This will cover the paper, acrylic paint and the painting tools. However, participants may want to bring their own supplies for the last day to apply what they've learned in their chosen medium.

Workshops are in the mornings leaving the afternoons free to relax, explore the island or work on art projects. Evening activities include performances and chapel. It's camp for adults. I can't wait!
Linda Celestianhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13366377181876833826noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6578427773054394972.post-8276587890629287822012-05-06T20:21:00.001-04:002012-05-06T20:21:11.423-04:00GoggleWorks OpeningA funny thing happened at the GoggleWorks opening on Friday night. My friend Marilyn and I decided to go to the opening since it might be our only chance to see the other work. Great turnout, great work.

I was really interested in meeting Lyn Godley, one of the jurors. She's an amazing artist and designer of interiors, product, furniture, lighting, and jewelry. She does work with fiber optic lights that you can see in the images from her show at the GoggleWorks here.

I was actually standing next to her and chatting her up about my piece when they started to announce the awards. She tapped me and said "Aren't you getting one of these?" When she saw I had no idea what she was talking about she back peddled and said "Well I put my vote in but I don't really know what they decided." 3rd place was announced, then 2nd, then 1st and I thought oh I guess I'm not getting an award. I saw that Lauralynn wasn't leaving the podium and there was one more award and she said something about this person is winning because of the 3 pieces she has in the show and then I knew. I won Best in Show and the award is a solo show, March 9 - April 14, 2013 in the Cohen Gallery which is a massive section of the first floor gallery space. I went up to get my award and turned around to find people snapping pictures of me. A reporter and photographer from the local paper the Reading Eagle were there and asked to interview me for an upcoming article. I really didn't see this coming and was in complete shock.

The funny part is I had some postcards of my paintings that I whipped out to show Lyn and Laralynn. They didn't even know I painted and said they can't wait to see my show. I can't wait to get to work.Linda Celestianhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13366377181876833826noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6578427773054394972.post-25374685575476553622012-05-03T11:41:00.001-04:002012-05-03T11:41:12.311-04:00Installing Sculpture I installed my fiber sculpture, The Ocean's Whisper to Me at the GoggleWorks in Reading, Pa. I want to thank Lauralynn for her help and for allowing me to pick the very best spot in the gallery to hang my large piece. I was concerned that it would only look good from the front since that's how I had worked on it in my studio so I chose a spot in front of a wall.

</div

I worked out a new hanging system with curtain rods and felted magnets with fishing line sewn to them. After I arranged and rearranged it in my studio I numbered and color coded the magnets and their placement on the rods. I'm so glad I did all this because I wasn't allowed to get up on a ladder in the gallery. I worked with a very patient gallery helper on the ladder. Handing each numbered magnet to him, he placed it to the corresponding number on the rod. It went up easily and quickly.

Lauralynn loved it and said let's see how it looks without the wall behind it. The walls in the gallery are moveable and viola. We liked it from every angle. This was an unexpected bonus so I took some pictures right before my camera battery went dead.

The opening is on Friday, May 4, 5:30 - 7:30. I've picked a date for the next Creativity Workshop, Sat. February 11, 2012, 11-5pm, at the Buzz Ware Village Center in Arden.. The time is 11-5 so that everyone can take Kerry Orr's yoga class first. I highly recommend Kerry's class on Saturday's normally 10-11:30, but on Feb. 11th it will be 9-10:30 so as not to conflict with my workshop. Thanks Kerry.

Here's the details about the workshop and a video that describes the musician Goyte's creative process.

Through guided exercises in creative writing, movement, painting and mixed media collage open up to fearlessly enter new territory and discover your authentic self-expression. The musician Gotye talks about the making of his recent album and his process sounds like what I teach in my workshop. An artist doesn't arrive at a finished masterpiece just one day after their morning coffee. It's a process of collecting bits and pieces, playing around with them, discovering new things about them and arranging them anew. To do this you need to welcome this process into your everyday life. The results will amaze and surprise you.

Making Making Mirrors - a short documentary from Gotye on Vimeo.

Here's a very cool music video of his using stop motion animation.

Linda Celestianhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13366377181876833826noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6578427773054394972.post-6993515265727413782011-12-21T17:52:00.001-05:002011-12-21T17:52:25.311-05:00Inspiring ArtistI caught a show of Pat Steir's paintings in November at the Locks Gallery. I've been aware of work for years but it was a pleasure to see it in person. Her paintings are similar to mine because they are made with thinned down oil paint that is poured.

The scale of some of them alone was impressive.

This one titled Forest in Snow is 127 x 109 inches.

Interestingly her approach is very different from mine in that she sets a course for the painting in the beginning deciding what order the colors will be added and how many layers and then executes it. She says it's removing herself from the role as the grand creator and leaving some things up to chance.

Double White on Black, 84 x 84 inches

I on the other hand try to strike a balance between allowing and controlling in the making of my work. I really struggle with this, wondering how much to force my ideas onto a piece and how much to leave up to chance. It leads me to question how this applies to life. Is it an illusion that we are in control of our destiny? When we are fighting for control is it beneficial to loosen the reigns a little and see where things fall?Linda Celestianhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13366377181876833826noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6578427773054394972.post-47272696453195279202011-12-07T18:47:00.001-05:002011-12-29T16:15:22.896-05:00FiberPhiladelphia 2012

My new silk piece titled Sea Foam will be included in Fiber Philadelphia 2012 Juried exhibition.

The show titled Outside/Inside the Box will be at the
Gray Area, in the Crane Arts Building, 1400 N American Street, Philadelphia, PA 19122
March 2 - April 15, 2012 with 2 openings, March and April.

The exhibition showcases innovative fiber/textile art that transcends disciplines and combines historic concepts with contemporary perspectives.
