FiberPhiladelphia

FiberPhiladelphia 2012 is an international biennial and regional festival that celebrates textile and fiber arts. The opening was on Saturday and I was kicking myself that I didn't bring my camera. The show is outstanding. I was unsuccessful in grabbing photos from the website so you'll have to follow the link and see for yourself Outside/Inside the Box

My husband snapped this picture of my daughter and her friend standing next to my piece.

If you're local it's worth seeing in person. Pictures can be deceiving some things I thought were large are actually small and others are surprisingly large and commanding. I think there's something for everyone to love in this show. Fiber art is alive and kicking and it's not your Grandma's knitting.

If you go don't miss stopping in on Warren and R.J. at bahdeebahdu a working studio for design and the development of art, sculpture and furnishings at 1522 N. American St. I featured on my blog here. You will find beautiful art, beautiful furnishings, and amazing trash to treasure light fixtures and sculptures. It's only a block away from the Crane Arts Building.

I've been busy working on accessories I'll be debuting at the Delaware Center for the Contemporary Arts in Wilmington, DE. An opening is scheduled for Friday, February 3rd in the DCCA's Alternatives Shop, 5-9 pm.

Silk pieces like below will be on display along with silk and glass, soldered pendants, matching earrings, silk and wool bracelets, felted rocks and some brand new canvas and silk pendants. Stop by the DCCA to see this work through the month of March. I'll post more pictures soon.

Inspiring Artist

I found this amazing artist that I'd like to share, her name is Kei Ito.

Here's an excerpt from her website "My practice links together costume design for dance and theatre productions, fashion design for individual clients, accessories under the label ‘Always Sky Above’ and textile and costume exhibitions for Galleries.
My work is distinguished by an interest in exploring new possibilities of pattern cutting and explorations of geometry. In this respect I am linking ideas of pattern with thoughts about the movement of the body.
Another feature of my working process is in its relationship to different costume and textiles traditions. In some respects I relationship to tradition might be likened to travelling through space, in effect the past affords to us the luxury of moving through times in ways that might enable us to sense its nuances. Design is not just the economy of outcome but the potentiality of an unrealised future in the process of occurring."

I love the way her work annihilates the boundary between fine art and commercial design.
